RESEARCH PROGRESS

February

Began the original investigation into wireless localization and handed in the proposal here.

March

Started the investigation into wireless bluetooth technologies and familiarised myself with the Lego NXT. Many different languages were considered and C# was selected as the most appropriate for the project.

April

Course work intensified thus project work slowed. Bluetooth was experimented with and tested and found to be inadequate. The technology is not fine graned enough. Thus the project needed to be re-evaluated.

May

An alternative approach is assessed, using ARToolKit and visual technologies. Thus the focus changed to visual technologies.

June

Worked on the literature Review for the project and wrote exams.

July

The bulk of the literature review was conducted in this month.

August

The implimentation upon the subsystems began this month. The ARTooLKit implimentation was completed

September

The Thesis was started and DSS services implimented.

October

Implimentation and write-up continued

November

The project was finished and handed in.

 

Project Abstract

Robotic control and interaction is often a complex and lengthy process utilising many different tools to help and often hinder human users ability to communicate commands to a robotic system.

Recent research has been directed into the development of autonomous systems capable of navigation of autonomous vehicles in different environments. One of the major problems in the development of self-navigating autonomous systems is the establishment of positional information for the said system

The goal of this research is to develop an extensible, but intuitive interaction method that combines mobile device visual localization and generation of simple robotic instructions (for the Lego NXT platform) into one easy step. Allowing users to focus on the task and not the tool.
