Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a method or a set of rules that define the way in which voice can be transmitted from sender to reciever over a data network. A network can be any set of interconnected devices. The networks that this project deals with are the Internet and Local Area Networks (LANs). A LAN is a set of interconnected devices that are fixed to a limited geographical area and are administered or owned by a single entity. Rhodes University (RU) has a campus wide network (LAN) on which our VoIP is setup on. University of Namibia (UNAM) also has a campus wide network on which VoIP is to be setup. The two VoIP 'hubs' should then communicate with each other over the Internet. Each hub will have iLanga. iLanga was developed at RU and it is a fully functional Asterisk based PBX. Asterisk is an open source softswitch (a software based PBX) that makes it possible for calls to be established/switched. Below is an illsutration of the intended project setup:
